Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Bribery and Positive Reinforcement?

Meltdowns in the middle of the store are everyone's worst nightmare. Bribery is when you give your child want they want so that they stop their behaviour. If you give a child a desired item when they are having a meltdown then you using bribery.  As a result the child learns to escalate the behaviour to get what they want. They realize the more fuss they make they will get what they want.

Positive Reinforcement is based on the child getting a desired item based upon their appropriate behaviour.  Positive Reinforcement is given after the child engages in the expected behaviour. “First eat at least one bite of your veggies and then you will get dessert”  Using first and then language (Premarck Principle) lets the child know the expectations.
